    from Halloween to Valentines

Like many Americans I continue to experience high anxiety about the general election taking place one week from today. I have several lingering questions in addition to worrying about the outcomes. Number One, how can November, 2024 be upon us already when we are still using leftover 4th of July napkins? Number Two, why are large acorns dropping from the gigantic oak tree in the backyard, rolling off the tin roof of our screen porch, and flying into the sun room windows with so much velocity I think we are under siege by malevolent squirrels? Thwack!

What could possibly distract me from the hate speech spewing from the campaign of the Man Who Would be King?

    Thank heaven for little boys.

Yesterday my friend Becky (whose family included three sons I named the Fabulous Huss Brothers when Pretty and I became “bi-stateual” with our second home in Texas from 2010-2014) sent us a picture of a thank-you note from her youngest son George who had his 12th birthday in September. She found the note when she was cleaning behind her desk – he had written the note two years ago to thank us for the Valentine’s card and cash Pretty and I sent when he was ten. Maybe the note got lost because the universe knew I would need it more now.

Distraction accomplished. I can survive another week.

I hope this helps you, too.

    Onward.

Finn, Oscar, Dwight, George – these are the names of the most important men in my life for the last nine years. I know for sure the number of years because Finn turned nine years old in November, Dwight will be nine this month, and I’ve known them both since they were new arrivals to the Snyder family in South Carolina and the Huss family in Texas respectively. Oscar, Dwight’s older brother, at eleven years old is the eldest of the Fabulous Huss Brothers of Worsham Street in Texas; George, the youngest Huss brother, is now seven.

Since my experience with infants becoming babies becoming children has been exclusively with boys, I admit to a certain trepidation when we found out our first grandchild was going to be a girl – a baby girl who is now three months old, a baby girl Pretty and I babysit two days a week while both her parents go to work.

I adore the men in my life – I always will – but boys, watch out.

    Girls rock.

    Stay tuned.

  • The Fabulous Huss Brothers – and How They Grew

My head is spinning from the realization that today is the first day of June, 2017. The first five months of this year have evaporated into thin air – I sometimes feel like I’ve been on the Scrambler which was the only ride I ever ventured to ride at the State Fair which I made every effort to avoid on an annual basis. My insides became outsides during the interminable twists and turns at such high velocities they made me stumble with dizziness when I finally was allowed to remove the bar and exit the small metal prison box. I had survived the Scrambler one more time.

I feel that same sense of relief at the end of the first five months of 2017. Moving is not for the faint of heart or body, a whirlwind trip south to New Orleans for the Saints and Sinners Literary Festival, the Final Four with an historic National Championship with our women’s basketball team, birthdays, good anniversaries, sad anniversaries, and finally the death of a cousin who took a part of my childhood with him. Enough already. I have been “scrambled.”

Pretty and I were relaxing at a pool party/ cookout at the home of our gay boys basketball buddies this past weekend. I was chatting with fellow blogger Mar-la-ti-dah (check out her blog sometime – she’s fun!) when she asked me about the Fabulous Huss Brothers from Worsham Street in Texas. She’s not the first person to inquire about those little guys who brought me such joy while I was there. I’m always happy when people are interested in the brothers Huss.

As the fickle finger of fate would have it, my friend Becky sent me pictures of her three sons this week so I am updating their profiles for everyone with the new images. Enjoy!

Every Texas family loves a bluebonnets picture!

This one was on my Mother’s Day card from the boys. It’s a picture that makes me smile but also gives me hope for the future in these tumultuous times. I love the Fabulous Huss Brothers and miss their daily afternoon visits as well as the porch chats with their mother and the other Little Women of Worsham Street. It’ll be no time until we see them again.
