the mystery of the unknown children

The children in these photos had significance to my mother who lost interest in her family history somewhere along the road to losing her memories. Pretty and I found these pictures among hundreds of them dumped haphazardly in boxes in my mom’s garage when we were cleaning out her house to move her from her home in Rosenberg to a memory care facility in Houston in 2007. I could identify most of the people in her large collection, but I am clueless on these children whose photos had no names anywhere. I love these photos for the times and places they represent, but what wouldn’t I give to know who they were and what their relationship was to my mom.

who is this little girl framed by flowers?

she had five identical pictures of this little boy

but no name on any of them

this little girl seemed happy with being photographed

these two little girls didn’t look happy at all

Blackburn Photography took this formal portait –

still in photography business in Houston today

The moral of this story (if there is one): ask questions today of the ancient ones in your family if you want to avoid unsolved mysteries in your future. Starting the new year is a good time to begin. My Uncle Marion might have said “discover more in 2024.” I say go for it.

My parents have a crate, about the size of a steamer trunk full of old photo albums… when I ws a kid. the crate was in the barn. I remember peaking in it and seeing big heavy photo albums with rich red velvet covers and board-like pages with photos of the most interesting looking people. I asked my dad about it and he said he didn’t know who they were pictures of…. Dad said he got the crate from his mother.

Well… Mom and Dad moved from New Hampshire to Tennessee 17 years ago, the crate came with them., Then in October last year, they moved again to the townhouse right next door to me, and the crate moved again. Maybe 2024 is the year I will look through the crate and dig down to the bottom of it. Who know’s what I’ll find?

Hi Lynda, so happy to hear from you and appreciated the story of the crate. I’m not sure what I can say to encourage you to tackle the crate contents, but I will tell you if you don’t start somewhere it won’t get done! I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised by at least some of the contents! Happy New Year – discover more in 2024!!

Had real issues accessing your blog for a few days. Said it wasn’t secure. Seems to be ok now. I can comment too, which I hadn’t been able to for quite some time! I admire your mother for keeping so many photos and for marking who they were on most.

Wayside Artist had the same problem! So glad you are back – I miss you when you’re away. Yes, my mom was good about marking a few of the pictures she kept, but I knew most of the ones she marked!! So many photos of children not marked, though. Strange. So I’m not sure if these are somehow related to us, but they must have some importance for her since she kept them.

Wow. How puzzling and sort of sad. Mystery children.

Yes, I had the same feeling when I went through these – just a sample.
